Wild horses of Corolla. by Tehani Grasso

When I went to the Outer Banks, North Carolina early this summer there were wild horses on the beach.

We were staying at a vacation home in Corolla, which is the last community at Outer Banks and is also a sanctuary for the wild horses. The herd of about 70 are on the entire 12,000 acres of beach marshes and dunes north of Villages at Ocean Hill to the Virginia borders. These horses are the direct descendants of horses brought in by the Spanish explorers. The foundation keeps the number of wild horses to around 60-70. They do this to preserve and protect them,

These horses looked very pretty from a distance but up close many of them had scars and wounds. I also noticed that there were many foals. One of the foals was so fond of me that I got to get up close and personal with this horse. They looked so tame and I had to be reminded that they are wild.

If I could go anywhere in the world I would want to go back and see these wild Spanish Mustang horses once more. This was the highlight of my summer vacation at Corolla, Outer Banks, North Carolina.
